Austria - Magic Mountains [8 days]

Theme and mountain paths change on this tour. Higher elevations are bridged by cable car or train. Nevertheless shorter but steep climbs have to be taken into account. You walk on plateaus of alpine character, some experience for self-guided tours is necessary. [scroll down for tour details]

Tour Details:

Day 1 - Individual arrival at health resort Payerbach
In Payerbach the first mountain train of the world starts (Semmering train), which became UNESCO World Heritage in 1999.

Day 2 - Train to Semmering trail
Take the first mountain train of the world to well-known town Semmering. The train-heritage trail explores the route of Ghega-train, now UNESCO World Heritage, with striking viaducts crossing deep valleys and gorges.

Day 3 - High walk on Rax Plateau
Ascent 2.200 m to the Rax plateau. You can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Several optional tours are available.

Day 4 - Payerbach/Prein
Rest day or walk along the water-pipeline trail to Kaiserbrunn, where you can visit an interesting museum or visit Höllental valley. Return by bus.

Day 5 - Across Bodenwiesen alpine pasture to Puchberg
The demanding ascent to Waldburg-Anger cabin is followed by a comfortable walk across the huge high alpine pasture Bodenwiese into the valley. Beautiful views of Schneeberg and the Rax Plateau.

Day 6 - By rack-railway up on Schneeberg
Today you take the famous rack-railway up to an elevation of more than 2.000 m. There are amazing views of the Austrian Alps. We suggest you try the "Buchtel" pastry, it is a speciality of the region.

Day 7 - By train to the foot of Hohe Wand (High Wall)
Today you will hike though the forests to Hohe Wand. A popular rock-wall for climbers. You can climb the wall if you wish, Vienna can be in sight if the weather is clear.

Day 8 - Individual departure
By train via Wiener Neustadt to Payerbach or to Vienna.
